Description

Early in my first quit (2011) I slipped with the "one puff" but didn't go into a full relapse.  Got back to my quit in less than a day.  Then with a triple digit quit going, I relapsed.  My addictive mind's "reasons" for why aren't important for they were only lies.  Yet at the time they felt like they were the "truth" then. 

Smoking didn't change the outcomes of any of the events that led to my relapse because it was just smoke (and mirrors). 

After making a few adjustments to my life, I began this quit on October 6, 2012.  I accept that my new normal is being a non-smoker.  I am reinventing a new self that embraces a better healthier lifestyle and cigarettes just don't fit into that picture.  I have not given anything up by choosing not to smoke anymore.

I CAN and am doing this...relearning life one day at a time (ODAT)

Thoughts for a Slip or Relapse:

  •   If you slip and lose your quit, don't lose the lesson. Feel your regrets but don't dwell on it.  Transform it into a future success for you can positively move past this experience.  Learn from the mistake so that you know what not to do the next time and keep going. Medical reasons to stop smoking

1. Based on a Finnish study, persistent smokers may have higher risk to become depressed in comparison to never smokers. Also those smokers who quit have an elevated risk of depressive symptoms in short run. However, in long run this risk declines to the level of never smokers. In other words, both completely smoke-free life style and successful smoking cessation in long run seem to protect from depressive symptoms.

2. Smoking has a negative effect on both cholesterol and blood pressure.

3. Smoking is harmful to the brain, mental decline is 5 times faster for smokers, speeds up the onset of Alzheimer's disease.

4. Smokers are twice as likely to lose teeth as non-smokers, have gum disease and other dental problems.

5. Smoking raises risk of autoimmune disease, raises the risk of developing lupus, more susceptible to developing rheumatoid arthritis.

6. Smoking raises risk of age-related macular degeneration and smokers are four times more likely to become blind.

7. People who smoke for more than 20 years are 70% more likely to have acid reflux disease than nonsmokers.

8. The prevalence of breast cancer among current smokers was 30% higher than women who had never smoked.

9. Smoking is linked to certain colon cancers.

10. Some studies have linked smoking to thyroid disease.

If I smoke, I'll be right back where I started. Where I started was desperately wishing I could be where I am today.

Smoked for more than 4 decades (1 - 2 ppd).  I am addicted to nicotine - a life-long chronic brain disease which must be addressed every day.

Stopping smoking is a process, not an event.  I will make slow and permanent changes in my habits so that they become my new lifestyle, not a temporary plan.

Nicotine withdrawal is a temporary inconvenince for a major improvement.  It will not last forever as long as I stay free of this drug by refusing to allow nicotine to enter my body.
