Hi!

On Monday we updated the registration and account update pages to conform to the username rules with the new Jive Community. In preparation for the move to our new community platform, one piece of housekeeping relates to member usernames.

Today, we sent out an email to users who have a username that needs to be updatedIn the event the message wasn’t delivered to all affected users and to ensure that as many people are aware, I’m posting this blog as well.

Who: Anyone with a username that is: not unique OR contains symbols OR contains spaces or has less than 3 or more than 30 characters. If your username is unique and doesn’t contain any invalid characters, then no action is required.

Why: The new community requires all usernames are unique so you can locate other users with ease.

How: Please log in to your BecomeAnEX account and update your username a valid one that contains only A-Z, a-z, 0-9, hyphen(-), underscore(_) or period(.). Your new username must be between 3-30 characters long. Your username must be unique.

IMPORTANT: If you click SUBMIT and the site spins, log out of EX and log back in and your new username should be submitted correctly.

When: By December 2nd

How to Know If You Need to Update Your Username: Just by looking at your username, you can see if your username includes special characters that are no longer supported (such as ♥, comma, ~, !, @, or *).  If you’re not sure if your username is unique, search the member directory for your username and see if other members come up.

If you have not updated your username by December 2, we will create a temporary one that meets the community requirements. You can update this on EX until we move platforms. If you want to change it after the move, you will need to submit a request.

If you have any questions, please post a question in the comments below.

I just tried it and it worked. Were you getting an error that told you why it wasn't working?

Yes it was saying to put in all the information and I did but It is working now. I guess it was you that fixed it because it was not working when I was on and so I logged out and then back in and now it is how I want it. Thanks for fixing it if you did it.

Well this is weird.  I can't log out.  Can you help me Mark?

OK, I looked myself up, thinking I remembered someone of the same username showing up at one of the bonfires. Sure enough, there is a NEWME (spelled in all caps) from several years ago. Mine is NewMe. So, do I need to change it? Since this other ME came before me, I guess I could become NewMe2.

Can we assume if we check members names and ours is the only one listed that it's okay to leave it as is?

OldBones-Larry

Got it to change to exactly what I wanted.

Thanks Mark.

@cpsono-  I sent you the logout link. You'll need to update your username as you have a space.

@NewMe We can change your old one to NewMe2 and leave this one as NewMe.

@Giulia

Yes if there is only one then you are good to go as long long as you don't contain any symbols or spaces.

Funny Youngatheart!  Do you want it? You're going to have to remove the space and parentheses from yours as well.

Are dashes ok?  e.g. toad-of-toad-hall, or maryquit3-20-12  and are those that you mentioned the ONLY ones not supported?  ♥, comma, ~, !, @, or *).  And is the period one of them?  Can we perhaps get a complete list of those that are NOT supported?  Does that include all foreign type faces like the umlaut, virgulilla, tilda and other diacritical markings?

The allowed characters are covered in the How: section.

How: Please log in to your BecomeAnEX account and update your username a valid one that contains only A-Z, a-z, 0-9, hyphen(-), underscore(_) or period(.). Your new username must be between 3-30 characters long. Your username must be unique.

@All

Q: Do I need my Quit Date in my username?

A: No your quit date will show in your community profile on the new community so including your quit date in username is unnecessary.

Q: How do I know if my new username contains invalid characters?

A:  Our new registration and account update pages will check for usernames that contain spaces, invalid characters or duplicates.  If you update your username and then save the page it will check to see if you username is valid.  If not it will provide an error.
