Tomorrow... Or maybe today...

It has been 3 years since I attempted my last quit. I always run from this site when I fail but this time I don't have a choice. I made a promise and I don't break promises. If any of you remember me then you remember my mom. I'm a little glad she's not on here this time because I need this to be about me and not because of her story (which everyone should read). I wish hwc was still on this site because I feel like I could use his sharp words to get through this.... "Quit making excuses".... "Why not quit right this second and not wait for a deadline"... His words ring loud and clear back in 2008. This time I'm quitting so I can be healthy. I want to be successful at crossfit and I want to climb mountains... I also want to breath!!!

So tomorrow is quit day but I have hopes that hwc will pop in my head today and I'll throw out the pack and be done!!  I'll be back 🙂

And he is right, why delay?  Lets start this journey right here, right now.  I do not know your Mother or know her story but this is your quit.  Crossfit, climbing mountains and smoking is not a good mix.  If you did it for six months before you can do it again. Life is too short to waste it on filling your whole body with massive chemicals day after day after day. Welcome back to the site and let us help you with this addiction, did you do any of the readings when you were here before?  Education is the key to a solid quit!  I hope to see you around for a long time.

Welcome back to our community!

The most important thing you can do right now is to educate yourself on what nicotine does to your body and mind. To that end, I highly recommend Allen Carr's “The Easy Way to Stop Smoking.” This is an easy and entertaining read. Here is a link to a free PDF version of it:

As well, read the sections on this site, and read the blogs, responses and pages of folks you think might be helpful. You might visit whyquit.com and quitsmokingonline.com for the good information contained there.

The idea is to change up your routines so the smoking associations are reduced.  Drink your coffee with your OTHER hand. If you always had that first smoke with your coffee, try putting your tennies on right out of bed, going for a quick walk, then taking your shower and THEN your coffee! Rearrange the furniture in the areas you used to smoke so the view is different.

You need to distract yourself through any craves.  You can take a bite out of a lemon (yup - rind and all), put your head in the freezer and take a deep breath of cold air, do a few jumping jacks, go for a brisk walk or march in place, play a computer game.  Don't let that smoking thought rattle around in your brain unchallenged. Sometimes you need to quit a minute or an hour at a time.  You will need to be disciplined in the early days to distract yourself when a crave hits.  Don't let that smoking thought rattle around your head alone.  Get busy!  Here is a link to a list of things to do instead of smoke if you need some fresh ideas:

The conversation in your head in response to the "I want a cigarette" thought needs to be, "Well, since I have decided not to do that anymore, what shall I do instead for the three minutes this crave will last?"  Then DO it.  You will need to put some effort into this in the early days, but it gets easier and easier to do.

Stay close to us here and ask questions when you have them and for support when you need it. We will be with you every step of the way!  Let us help make this your FINAL quit!

You did it before so you CAN do it again.  Just DO it, don't try.  No matter how you feel or what you tell yourself or what happens to you just keep moving forward smoke free one hour at a time until it becomes one morning, one afternoon, or one evening at a time.  You have been thinking of quitting for a llllooooonnng time & "trying".  Life is moving faster & faster as you continue to smoke it away.  Enough!  Start yourself on a different path & just keep building on it.  It's a CHOICE -- make it & then don't look back!  (PS It's a perfect time of year to stock up on "your" candy canes!)  Patty d907
