Stressor Smackdown

Imagine the most humid, hottest, armpit of civilization you can live. Well, I live there. Two nights ago, my a/c went out. It's not like, cool mountain air is going to erase the heat built up in the asphalt that surrounds me, or the heat built up in my attic, but as the thermostat passed 85 inside the house and continued to rise, all I wanted to do was go sit outside in the 80 degree breeze, where the evaporation of my sweat would cool me down some. Understand, with the heat index, it easily reaches 110 at the hottest part of the day, with a nice thick layer of humidity so your sweat doesn't evaporate to cool you down. Now, that in itself was not the stressor that made me want to run to the nearest store to buy a pack. The thought that was trigerring it was that I didn't know how I was going to pay for whatever was wrong with the a/c in the first place, especially since I didn't know what was wrong with it. Stupid me. If I had gone out and bought the cigs, I would've been $6.00 poorer, and smoking would've just attracted more mosqitos to bite me 😉 I got through the night with fans and good old fashioned wet washclothes, and just reminisced about the summers I used to spend with my grandparents in Oklahoma without a/c. There, with windows open, listening to the crickets and night sounds out in the middle of the country, Grandma would bring in more wet washclothes on those especially hot nights.. Back then, I didn't smoke, so if i could make it through those nights, I could make it through this night. I also just told myself I'd put the a/c repair cost on a credit card (which I hate and only have for emergencies like ill family, last minute airfare, rental cars, etc.)  After all, no a/c to a 48 year old woman is like withholding crack from a crack addict. So, on the credit card the bill went, having my a/c back by 10:30 the next morning, and I was able to sleep like a baby last night, although the nostalgia of nights at my grandparents had me keep the fan on, and I turned my sound machine to crickets 🙂

I remember those days when we didn't have air. It was always fans, sprinklers and putting my pillow in freezer.  Never thought to keep wet clothes on. Now that we have air those so called "fun" days are over. Nice to remember those times though. Glad you protected your quit and now have air too 😉

Great job! Hopefully that never happens again, but if it does, light a fire in the firepit if you have one. it burns the humidity.

Oh Lordy, if a firepit would cure our humidity issues in this ex-swamp, asphalt covered suburb of Houston, then we'd all be using them. At noon, it's already a heat index of 100, and it won't top out until later this afternoon. Humidity tonight is supposed to be 83%. Thank goodness I have the a/c! I dared to turn it down to 77! lol I need to move to Fairbanks or Greenland until my hot flashes finish!

Up here in N. E. Mn we had a frost warning...can you go figure July 29th my temp went down to 38 degrees...My poor veggie garden...My furnace turned on I should have gone out to the firepit...but the skeeters were too hungry..Susie day 123 smoke free.

@cwood, LOL that is so funny you should say that. We kept our's down to 75 and I heard some gripping from the man of the house about how hot it was. I told him that no matter how low the air was on it wasn't going to help his flashes!

@susie, we put the firepit on for the skeeters too! : )

for keeping the mosquitos at bay in my EX usual spot, I've always grown mint. My tomatoes gave me my last bunch about 2weeks ago, and it's so hot here, we have to wait until nightfall to grill anything, and that's with 3 foot long tongs;-) some day, I will escape this heat and humidity. I'll have to learn to drive in the snow and on ice, though.

Now given. MD were I grew up does get hot, but not as hot as were your located. My mom would not let us use the AC.  So I remember a lot of nights with windows open and fans running. Some nights, were restless. Glad your AC is back on, and great way to protect quit.

I spent some time in MD a few summers ago in the summer, and I was happy for the pool and a/c. It's hot and humid there in the summers! Almost felt like home.
