A word about quitting and weight gain

Good morning everyone! I just wanted to shoot out a quick post about weight gain, since so many people seem to be concerned about that. As I’ve mentioned before, I was on a supervised diet for three months before I quit smoking. I really wanted to quit while I was still on it to avoid gaining back any unwanted weight. I found that when I first quit I plateaued for 2-3 weeks and didn’t lose during that time (I had been losing about 2 pounds a week, for a total of 35 lbs). But I have gotten back in the groove and made sure that I have continue to eat healthy. I make sure that there are healthy snacks in the house at all times, such as baby carrots, bell peppers and zucchini etc. which I have found are great with flavored hummus or other low cal dips.  I’ve been eating fruit in moderation, since it can also be high in carbs. I have been eating more “normal“ food since I quit, but I make sure that my portions are smaller than before. This way I don’t feel like I’m cheating myself out of anything, just eating less of it.

Anyway the good news is I finally hopped on the scale (yes I had been afraid!) And I’m excited that I’ve lost another 6 pounds in the last month! So for those of you who are not trying to lose but are just trying to maintain, having those healthy snacks in the house can be a lifesaver! If you are going to eat more snacks, just try to trim your portions down for meals a little bit. I’m not a doctor and don’t claim to be a weight loss expert by any means, but I just thought that sharing my story may be helpful to others who are concerned!

I hope you all have an awesome day!

About the Author
I am a 59 year old single female who loves animals, working in my yard and photography. I currently have 7 animals: 2 dogs, 3 cats and 2 parrots. I love the outdoors, especially the ocean, and like to get outside as often as possible. I became very sick In 2017 and I was diagnosed with Myofibrillar Myopathy, a rare form of muscular dystrophy, in 2018, and had two major spinal surgeries to correct neuromuscular scoliosis, which was causing a 75° curve in my lumbar spine, in 2019. I then had my left knee replaced in 2020 (my right one had been replaced in 2016). So I have been through a lot of surgeries in the last six years. Not to mention several that came before that. I am on a quest to get healthier and I’m currently on a weight loss journey to lose 55lbs, which I’ve already lost 40lbs. I want to quit smoking while I am on my weight loss program so that I don’t gain weight during the quit! I’ve quit smoking several times in my life for over 2 years, and one time for 10 years! This time I want to quit for good! I know I can do it! It is just going to take willpower and the right state of mind. I’m hoping that this program and support group can help me achieve that! From what I have seen so far of the group, I want to remain a long-term member, and be able to share my advice and story 10 years down the road! I am finding that helping others quit, helps me stay quit!!
