Alligators are cold-blooded animals that have a really slow metabolism that allows them to survive and go without eating for months and in extreme situations, even 2-3 years. In fact, fasting is something they do every winter. During chilly weather alligators enter a hibernation-like state called brumation that basically shuts down their entire body and keeps them alive without requiring or wasting energy.
