Change in plans

My last blog described my move (which went very well) and training to walk in a half marathon. The walk was scheduled for this coming Sunday. However, 2 days ago, my friend and I recieved an email which contained a change to the half marathon. Originally the walkers were going to be allowed to start an hour before the runners and would be given 4 hours to finish. I felt confident I could do that.

The change involved everyone starting at the same time and would be required to reach the 12 mile mark within 3 hours. Well, that pace won't work for me. I have trained since July and have been proud to walk several times at 7 plus miles - including four 10 mile walks. I had a bum knee before starting the training and it hasn't been too happy! At one point, about a week before my move, I had to have a cortisone shot in my knee. That helped for about 3 weeks. I kept on training.

Bottom line - I was too stubborn to back out. I knew I could do this! However, I have to be realistic and I know I can't do the newly required pace. My friend is so angry about this last minute change that she will not do the race either.

Although disappointed, I know I accomplished great things by walking 10 miles! As I mentioned in my last blog, I could barely walk ONE mile when I quit! And, since I have been celebrating my anniversaries by walking that number of miles (I did 5 miles for 5 years back in June!) - I know I am now prepared for years 6 through 10!

Take care friends! I am now back to my "short" walks of 4 or 5 miles every other day!
