Moderation and Spam in the New Ex Community

Reporting comments and accounts, especially to report or block spam, has been a major source of stress for the BecomeAnEX Community. As we forge ahead into a new technology platform, I thought I’d take this opportunity to share some major improvements on this topic.

Abuse Reporting

All members of the Community will have the ability to click a “Report Abuse” link in the Community. When a member clicks the link, a notification goes to an appropriate moderator. Until the item gets approved or rejected, it will continue to be displayed in the Community. The big win for us here is that abuse reporting is much more fine-tuned on our new platform. You can report an original post or an individual comment as abuse, and give a reason why you feel that content should be taken down.

Another major improvement is that the new platform can automatically hide a post or comment once a certain threshold number of members have flagged it. If many Community members report a comment as abusive, it will be automatically hidden even if the moderation review is still pending.

Spam Filtering

The new platform is set up to work with Akismet, a powerful anti-spam tool that recognizes and filters out spam content. The idea here is to let you focus on the reason you’re here — helping others to quit tobacco — rather than playing spam cops. Once we’ve made the move over to the new platform, look for another post from me with more specifics about how all of this works.

We’ll also be rolling out new spam and abuse mitigation tools once we’ve moved to the new platform, so keep your eyes peeled!
