I deal with the pains of RA. I'm scared that quitting while dealing with RA will cause me to slip.

Also, concerned with possible interactions with my RA medicines and quitting smoking, but I'm not sure I can quit cold turkey.

I just had my right shoulder replaced and need right knee replaced. Surgeon won't touch knee till I can test nicotine free so using a nicotine replacement aid is out. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

@CommunityAdmin From my perspective there is too much anti-aids propaganda to help with quits on the site.  I wish with this would be discussed so quitters aren't meant to feel guilty that they'll become addicted to NRT.

And there are many quitters that come to the site with psychological issues.  The responses here often don't  apply to quitters dealing with these kind issues.  A canned response probably doesn't apply to them.  Most of us haven't been there!

@trish4801

Thanks. I'll share this with Dr. Ebbert and Tim for our call tomorrow.

@Barbscloud Thanks for your post. Agreed that people shouldn't be made to feel guilty about their choice to use Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) if that is going to help them be successful. As for your post about your feeling about their being propoganda on the site.  I'd be happy to have a conversation with you directly about it as this is not the post/venue to discuss that topic.

@Steelers4 Wanted you to see this Live Event as well since you expressed similar concern to @trish4801 about using quit aids prior to your surgery.

Hoping you can join the live event later today and listen in with @Dr_Ebbert and @MikeBurke (filling in for @TimMilbrandt ).

Mayo Clinic

Cotinine is the chemical ("metabolite") that breaks down from nicotine in your body. Nicotine is in nicotine replacement therapy and in tobacco. If you need to be tested prior to surgery to prove you are not using tobacco, your surgeon or internist can order a "Nicotine and Metabolites, Urine" to look for substances that can tell the difference between somebody using tobacco and somebody using only nicotine replacement therapy. Not every medical center will have this test. Mayo Clinic does provide this test for other institutions: NICOU - Overview: Nicotine and Metabolites, Random, Urine (mayocliniclabs.com)

Dear Dr. Ebbert I will call the Cleveland clinic asap when they open .  I will speak to the female that is being hard on testing me.  I already told her I am using your website and acused her of not caring of my continued health after the surgery.  I told her I had to be on the nasal spray 3-6 months to be able to quit smoking.  So I told her I would test positive for nicotine.  She did not evan know about cotine until I told her.  Thank you for your info

@Dr_Ebbert Thank you for sharing this.  I'm glad I asked @CommunityAdmin about this.

I've read this before, but apparently even health care workers aren't aware of this.

They put my hip replacement back 1 month and I can barely walk now so it is evan harder to quit.  You know these younger nures only see black and white and do not understand b/c they are fortunate and did not smoke.  If I could have surgery somewhere else I would b/c of the b.s.  I never went thr this before at this hospital.  Maybe it is just the surgons orders I do not know>
