Diet and Nutrition | Tip Of The Day

What I used to quit:
  • RenewLife Smoker's Cleanse | I found it at a small shop in Seattle. You can buy it online if you look around. I think the herbs do detox you and it's a great distraction from smoking.
  • Acupuncture | I went here. If you're in Seattle, this place is great. It helped a lot, especially at the beginning -- I recommend talking to an acupuncturist before you quit to see if they have a specific cessation plan. Many do. For a little background on addiction and acupuncture, start here (Wikipedia haters, don't click that).
  • BecomeAnEx | This site that you're on right now, of course. Read the EX site, write a blog post, read other people's pages, start a discussion in the forums, any and all of it. Some people here are uber-helpful and there are tons of ideas and advice floating around.
  • Dum Dums | Not kidding. I bought a bag of about 40 when I quit and went through it in the first week. It gives your mouth and hands something to do, which was (and is) a hard part for me.
  • Friends and Family | Yup, as cheesey as it's sounded to me all these years, it really does help to have a support group behind you. People in your own life who will watch your back (from yourself) while you quit.

That little voice that says it's hard to believe you can be quit? It's your inner critic. Your inner critic is like a real-life critic -- it's job is to try and pull you down, but it really doesn't know anything about what you do. --me

62 days, and it's rough again

Yesterday morning I was picking up some breakfast at the corner store. For the first time since I quit, I looked right at the Parliament Lights sitting in the rack behind the counter and had half a millisecond of a thought about buying a pack. I looked at the cashier, who asked, "Anything else?"

"Nah, that's it," I answered. It was hard to say.

I've been having dreams about smoking. I've been getting occasional cravings again, too. What's the deal? Things were going so well and…

Smoking dreams. 3 of 'em in 2 weeks. This is the first time this has happened since I quit. They were all slightly different, but each dream was intense, vivid. Moreso than my usual dreams. Each one has the cigarette seeming less and less gross, too. I wake up and kinda laugh at myself, but damn! They definitely are not helping.

if i can get through this...

This was just one part of my weird day yesterday: read my rant on craigslist.

I didn't smoke. I'm proud of that.

Day 45

Someone somewhere forgot to cross a t or dot an i, so I didn't start work today. It's been bumped to Monday. I'm cool with that -- it gives me that much more time to prepare.

44 days

It's been 44 days since I quit my pack-a-day habit. I'm starting back at work tomorrow. I was smoking when my leave from work kicked in, so it'll be interesting to return. I've never been not-smoking at that job. Hoping the stress doesn't do evil things, like, say, send me to 7-11 in search of those Parliament Lights.

37 days

There are now huge chunks of time (read: almost 24 hours) where I don't think about smoking a single puff. It's nice, although what I really want is to not think about cigarettes at all. One of the reasons I quit was because I was tired of how much they ruled my day. It still feels like that sometimes. Like I can almost see the ghost of a Cigarette King in the corner of my mind, still wearing his jeweled crown, still sitting on his high throne, waving his matchstick scepter whenever I feel like…

Here's to hoping next month is easier.

Day 28

Now that the stresses from the end of last week have dissipated, I'm not really thinking about smoking as much. I guess I'll be looking out for those stressy moments for a while so I'll know why I'm craving.

Day 26

I've been getting more cravings lately. Usually a couple a day. It's like they slowed down a bunch for a week or so and now they're back more often. Very. Frustrating. I thought things were supposed to keep getting easier...

Almost Day 25

It was hard not to. It is hard not to, right now. Insomnia piled on top of an emotional evening. I know a smoke won't make me feel better or put me to sleep or help at all. I hate these rough times where I can talk myself out of actually smoking, but I can't stop thinking about it.

Victory is at hand. The wicked cigarette king just had his scepter taken away for good. I'm still thinking about that great blog. Someone who is as gifted a writer as you deserves to live to a ripe old age. I'm with John, Keep on keepin' on. Repeat
