I am a newbie ;-)

Please excuse any typos, I have only the use of one hand right now. My left hand is wrapped up from getting 3rd degree burns from a hobby rocket explosion.

I have tried quitting many times in the past, but now, my 8 yr old son really asked me to quit, and he did in such a way, I can't refuse!
I was given several chantix samples by my Dr., and plan to set a date of April 24th to have completely quit (my 9th Anniversery!).

I would like to accept ALL constructive critisism and tips from anyone that wishes to help a fellow "becomeanex". I do really want to quit, or I'll say I AM REALLY QUITTING this time, AND NOT STARTING BACK!
So, thank you all for allowing me to introduce / explain myself and why I am here and what I would like to get from this community.
Anyone in Milton / Pensacola area in Florida, please feel free to email me for my cell # if yu wish to be a support buddy with me (I am not picky either, I will accept a quitting buddy without bias to gender, age, sexual preference, or nationality).

Sheesh, I hope your hand feels better. I used to share your hobby, so I know those little rocket engines pack a punch.

There is nothing like our kids to help us do the right thing. Please let us know how you're doing :)

Walter, the VERY BEST of luck to you in becoming an ex-smoker once and for all!! I will keep you - and all others on this board - and all addicts in general, because that is what we are - in my prayers,

Would you PLEASE write back to this board and let us know how the Chantix is working for you? I am considering going to my doc and asking for a script. The Commit lozenges keep the urges at bay, but I find myself sometimes just wigging out; i.e., screaming, sobbing, feeling really depressed, feeling like a deer caught in some car's headlights and just "frozen," - life's not worth living, etc. You know the routine.....

In my opinion, a parent and the example he sets is a VERY POWERFUL example to their child. The way I look at it is: by YOU setting the example for your child and quitting smoking, he will most probably never smoke, so you'll be saving him a lifetime of addiction, health problems, and if it doesn't kill him, the ultimate struggle to get off of nicotine once and for all. Not only that, you will be doing your body such a world of good and will feel so much better and live a lot longer. It's a win-win situation for you and your loved ones!

This morning, I wrote my father an e-mail crying in my soup about not having had a cigarrete in days - the "Oh Woe is Me" thing." He's 84 years old and smoked all his life. At the young tender age of 17, he was in the first wave in fighting in Iwo Jima; then survived that and went on to fight the Koreans, so you know he's been through hell and tough as nails. Anyway, he wants to quit too, so when he read my e-mails this morning, he wrote back saying:

"Day ONE

Going cold turkey!

Mind over matter!

Love you,

Dad"

Well, THAT e-mail helped me tremendously!!

Finally, not that I know much because just a few days after quitting, I'm still struggling horribly, too, but have faith in God and ask Him to keep you from smoking. He can do anything. He never wanted you to smoke in the first place, and He doesn't want you to continue to smoke, and He will do what is necessary so that you will never smoke again. Ask for Divine help constantly and lean on your rock (God) for support to get you through this too.

Well, enough of my rambling. The best of luck to you, and please write back and let the board know how you're doing!

Lynn in Atlanta, GA

P.S.: On another board, a woman who's smoked for a long time is trying to quit, and she wrote this about giving up her cigarettes:

"It's like saying goodbye to an old friend who wants to murder me!"
