Technology, the other addiction

It’s hard to go anywhere without your phone these days. We’re always connected. Admittedly, there are times that I like to drop my virtual leash (my mobile phone) and go out and about without it to remember the days before we were so connected. These are relaxing times for me, away from the things that add stress.

Even while on these mini getaways, our thoughts follow us. Cravings can follow us too. They don’t get locked up in a car or left on the kitchen counter. So even if you escape from life, you might have to deal with a craving in a moment of relaxation.  In general, it seems people’s phones are that “Go-To” distraction. But it’s also evident that  phones and tablets have become an addiction in their own right, so we prepare ourselves to have them in-hand, all the timesAs helpful as they are, they can also become a crutch of distraction. We should ask ourselves, “What will we do when that crutch isn’t available to us? What will we do when we’ve intentionally set it down or misplaced it by accident? How will we react when a craving hits?

The long-time EXers on the site advise to the newcomers that having a plan is key. Being prepared is key. Education is key. So as you are changing your routine and improving your life, think about how to be prepared even when something doesn’t go right or you intentionally decide to disconnect.  If you’re not to the point of disconnecting, then find an activity that is educational. Start a documentary on Netflix or get a Words with Friends partner. Limit your technology distraction to just when the craving occurs and make sure to have a variety of tools in place so you’re not too dependent on just one thing.

What are some of your favorite non-technology craving busters? What other tools have you found helpful as you develop new routines?
