The Lion & The Spiders

There is an Ethiopian proverb that says,   “When spider webs unite, they can tie up a lion.”

This proverb was born within the African “village culture”, where teamwork is a community principle for survival. I think it can certainly apply to us here, too. When our “village” brings together our individual “webs” (creating blogs, responding to ideas, sharing knowledge, asking questions, seeking help, offering support, exchanging messages, cultivating friendships, etc.), we can be strong enough to tie up the “lion” (cigarette use and nicotine addiction).

Now, take this proverb, turn it at a slight angle, and look at it another way…

Little things can pile up. One thin strand tangles with another thin strand, and they get tangled up in that strand and that strand and that strand. If we let little things get knotted together (not reading the material, not preparing to quit, not practicing delays and distractions, not asking for help, not investing in our support group, etc.), then our mighty “Lion” (our Quits) can get tied up by a gloppy net of the littlest things.

You might even see yet another angle that warns that we, as courageous “lions”, must not allow ourselves to get knotted up in the sticky “webs” of “spiders” who mean to tie us down.

So, yeah…that’s 3 possible takeaways from one very ancient proverb. How cool is that?! And,   y ou get to decide which perspective (if any) might work   with you and   your quit journey.
