Recovery from addiction

Hello. My name is Theresa and I’m a nicotine addict.

I think a lot, and spend time contemplating a million different things. And so I write. A LOT! Writing is a form of therapy for me, which means this site is the perfect form of quit smoking treatment. In fact, I feel a little like I AM in treatment—you know, the same kind of hospital setting for alcoholism—except we’re here to recover from our smoking addiction. And just like a treatment program, it is fitting that I spend time learning, reading your blogs and comments, writing, and sharing my thoughts and journey with you. Intensive treatment to recover from an extensive addiction and disease.

Our blogs are a lot like group therapy assignments and working the 12th Step. For those not familiar, the Twelve Step process involves the following:

·         admitting that one cannot control one's addiction or compulsion;

·         recognizing a higher power that can give strength;

·         examining past errors with the help of a sponsor (experienced member);

·         making amends for these errors;

·         learning to live a new life with a new code of behavior;

·         helping others who suffer from the same addictions or compulsions.

Wow, I just discovered that there is an actual Twelve Step program called Nicotine Anonymous! Here is a link to their actual 12 steps: http://www.nicotine-anonymous.org/publications_content.php?pub_id=349

That’s pretty cool! Although I feel like I have my group meetings right here at BecomeAnEX. Some of you are in treatment with me, some are those I would meet at a meeting, and some would be great sponsors!
