Smoker's Musings

Having a better sense of smell is both a blessing and a curse.  I love the way the earth smells in general, I always have and as a smoker I truly enjoyed stepping out on the porch and inhaling the scent of damp earth, or the faint aroma of winter brush fire... but as a non-smoker, those smells are phenomenal!  I wanted to just close my eyes and breathe in, deep wonderful breaths without the usual wheezing and gasping and eventual coughing.  And the smell of fresh coffee brewing... oh... so heavenly!!

The smell of exhaust as I sit in traffic at a light, the weird smell of the guy in front of me at the grocery store ( what the hell was that anyway? It was like motor oil, garlic and old shoes, and peanut butter.. GAG! ) The linger scent of nicotine clinging to a passerby, its just amazing how potent that smell is, but to my surprise, there was no desire there, no longing for the deadly friend that I have turned my back on.    The shocker was when I was leaving my 2nd job for the evening.  I used to leave and have a smoke in my car as drove the short  three blocks home ( yes, there is a lazy streak in me, but we will address that later ).  I was walking to my car and out of sheer habit, I reached into my pocket for my pack of cigarettes.  I found butterscotch candies instead... my reminder that the candies were my new cigarettes.  The craving was gone almost as instant as it hit, but it was a good reminder that the Smoking Devil will jump out at me at any given time, hoping to entice me back into his arms with his promises of comfort and relaxation, telling me "Just one won't hurt".   Just one WILL hurt, I know it will and I must never forget that.

I am an eight-Day Survivor... Life is looking better already....
