Yesterday I take my wife in to the hospital for a doctor's appointment. I drop her off at the front door, go and park the car, and come back to the front entrance. As I'm approaching the door, I see an older gentleman sitting on one of the benches not 5 feet from the front entrance. Because this has happened before, I know there are signs posted at the entrance that say "welcome to our smoke free facility." But this particular time I notice there is one of those signs not 3 feet in front of this man. He knows he's not supposed to smoke there, he just doesn't care. The sign is facing away from him, so he can't see it. I think he knew it was there, he just chose to ignore it. So, as I walk towards him I'm thinking to myself, you've got to say something, if people don't care, this kind of thing will just keep on and on. So how can I say something without pissing this guy off? Then an idea came to me. I walked up to the entrance, and as I walked past him I didn't say a word, I simply picked up the sign, turned it around and set it right in front of him so he could read it, and walked in to the hospital. I got no reaction from him, and I suppose he got the message. I was happy, because I found a way to let him know I didn't like what he was doing, without starting a fight. But if you do nothing, you change nothing.
