Why am I not coughing?

This is something I've been wondering about - almost every quit smoking article I read, and others' accounts, mention coughing up grossness as a universal experience after quitting.

I'm on Day 7 and no coughing.

My lungs feel a million percent better....I am definitely breathing better. I'm relatively fit, not overweight, but not a daily exerciser before this, because of the shortness of breath. I have exercised every single day and it gets better, every single day.

I smoked about 15 a day, for almost 15 years with breaks during 2 pregnancies...enough that my lungs should be coated in gross.

I should say, too, that when I quit after finding out I was pregnant both times (which were the only times I made it longer than a few days), I got sick....like full-blown sinus infection/bronchitis, antibiotics sick. So I was coughing, but I was really ill too. Plus (shame) I cheated, an average of maybe one a week in both pregnancies "to take the edge off." Mom of the year, I know.

I've noticed increased nasal congestion, and have taken Sudafed here and there when it got bad. But no sore throat, no coughing, even though my lung function has improved noticeably.

Is this normal?
